However, even before the pandemic, there was talk of reform. Last year, the Business Roundtable (a group comprising 181 CEOs of America's major corporations) stated that companies must "support the communities in which they operate," reversing American economist Milton Friedman's long-held belief in wealth maximisation for shareholders.
